For generations, all that could be heard from the Van Dijk smallholding was the gentle swoosh of the windmill blades, the lapping of water in the river and the cries of joy when the bread, fresh from the Dutch oven was sampled. Until recently that is, when a US military base was set up only a couple of miles from the bakery, and now twice a day, every day, a chinook lumbered overhead with engines so loud that poor Pieter had to hang on to the crockery in the farmhouse for fear of it jumping off the shelves. And twice a day Pieter could be heard shouting double Dutch at that bloody helicopter!
