Despite Eliza knowing she was very privileged, she was unfulfilled. She was married, which gave her security, but she was ultimately utterly reliant on men to live. She could own no property, nor money, nor take a job, nor vote. Eliza usually read romance books when she took her elevenses but today was different. She’d been lent a book by her neighbour, Baroness Cartland and it looked VERY interesting. Eliza had a feeling that things would never be the same again.
